A 37-year-old Sri Lankan man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of his estranged wife in a car park in Cardiff.
Niwunhellage Dona Nirodha Kalapni Niwunhella, known as Nirodha, 32, was killed at South Morgan Place in the Riverside area of Cardiff on August 21, 2025. She died at the scene from stab injuries.
Her estranged husband, Thisara Weragalage, from Pentwyn, had been separated from her for several months at the time of the attack. He initially denied the murder but later pleaded guilty at a hearing in January.
Sentencing him to life imprisonment, Judge Daniel Williams said Weragalage’s “brutal selfishness” had cut Nirodha’s life short.
The court heard that the attack took place in a car park and was linked to the breakdown of the couple’s relationship after Nirodha began seeing a work colleague.
Weragalage was ordered to serve life in prison with a minimum term of 23 years and nine months before he can be considered for release.
