A man has been sentenced to 37 years in prison for brutally murdering his wife with an axe in front of their teenage children, a crime described as horrific by the judge.
Dinush Kurera, 47, showed no emotion as Justice Amanda Fox of the Victorian Supreme Court delivered his sentence, which includes eligibility for parole after 30 years.
Kurera claimed he acted in self-defense when he killed his wife, Nelomie Perera, with an axe and knife in their Melbourne home on 3rd of December 2022.
However, a jury quickly rejected his defense and convicted him of murder after just three hours of deliberation.
Justice Fox condemned Kurera’s actions as driven by anger and a sense of entitlement, stating that he felt his wife deserved to die for leaving him and seeing other men.
The couple’s teenage children witnessed the attack, with their 16-year-old daughter attempting to intervene, and both children later shared the emotional toll of the trial in victim impact statements.
