A 37-year-old Sri Lankan man, Thisara Weragalage from Pentwyn, has been charged with murder after a 32-year-old Sri Lankan woman, Niwunhellage Dona Nirodha Kalapni Niwunhella, known as Nirodha, was found dead on a street in Cardiff.
South Wales Police were called to South Morgan Place in Riverside at 07:37 BST on Thursday following reports of a seriously injured woman. Nirodha was pronounced dead at the scene.
Weragalage was arrested shortly after on Seawall Road in Splott and charged with murder. Police confirmed that he was known to Nirodha and remains in custody ahead of his scheduled appearance at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
Paying tribute, Nirodha’s family described her as a “cherished daughter, family member, and dear friend to many,” saying her memory will continue to inspire them.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Davies extended his “heartfelt condolences” to Nirodha’s family, friends, and loved ones, and urged anyone with information to come forward to support the investigation.
