Sri Lankan journalist Namini Wijedasa has been named a recipient of the U.S. Secretary of State’s 2025 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award, the U.S. Department of State announced.
With over 30 years of experience, Wijedasa began her career reporting on the human impact of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict, amplifying the voices of those affected. Over time, she shifted her focus to investigative journalism, exposing corruption and bringing critical accountability issues to light.
Her work has consistently championed transparency, emphasizing the need for public demand in addressing national challenges. Despite restrictive laws that hinder press freedom in Sri Lanka, she remains steadfast in her mission for positive change.
Wijedasa’s journalism not only holds the powerful accountable but also fosters discussions on economic development and good governance, inspiring a new generation of reporters.
The annual IWOC Awards ceremony, hosted by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and First Lady Jill Biden, will take place on 1st of April at 1:00 p.m. EDT at the Department of State.
Now in its 19th year, the IWOC Award honors women worldwide who have shown exceptional courage and leadership, often at great personal risk. Since 2007, over 200 women from more than 90 countries have been recognized. U.S. diplomatic missions nominate candidates, with finalists selected by senior officials.
