The Exporters’ Association of Sri Lanka and the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) have welcomed the recent reduction in U.S. tariffs on Sri Lankan exports, now revised to 20%.
Both organizations praised the successful outcome of trade negotiations between Sri Lanka and the United States, calling it a significant boost for the country’s export competitiveness.
The Exporters’ Association commended the strategic leadership of Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma and thanked the Government of Sri Lanka for its dedication in securing improved trade terms.
Special recognition was also given to Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe for his crucial diplomatic support and efforts to strengthen bilateral trade ties.
The Association emphasized that the tariff revision will enhance Sri Lanka’s position in the global market and contribute to national economic recovery and growth.
The JAAF echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the negotiation team for their pragmatic and sustained engagement since April.
JAAF highlighted that the revised 20% tariff brings Sri Lanka closer to competing with other major apparel-exporting nations in the region, such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.
It also praised the role of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington, D.C., for facilitating effective dialogue with U.S. stakeholders throughout the negotiation process.
JAAF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government and U.S. partners to uphold ethical labor practices, sustainability, and innovation in apparel production.
Both associations expressed optimism that this success would lead to deeper trade relations and potentially further tariff reductions in the future.
