The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the re-establishment of a Sri Lankan Embassy in Cyprus, which will begin operations on 20th of July to provide diplomatic services to Sri Lankans residing in the country.
According to an official statement, the Government of Cyprus has granted approval for the opening of the embassy, and a delegation appointed by the Foreign Ministry will depart for Cyprus on July 15 to commence operations.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the decision to reopen the embassy was made in response to repeated requests from Sri Lankans living in Cyprus.
Once operational, the embassy will offer essential consular services to the Sri Lankan community and work toward expanding employment opportunities, as well as enhancing trade and investment between the two countries.
Approximately 15,000 Sri Lankans currently live in Cyprus. In recent years, the closure of the previous embassy had forced them to seek diplomatic assistance from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.
The Foreign Ministry noted that, with Minister Herath’s intervention, the new government has taken a significant step in addressing the long-standing concerns of Sri Lankans in Cyprus by launching this diplomatic mission.
