Tiana Sumanasekera, an 18-year-old gymnast, has captivated audiences this season with a vibrant Bollywood-inspired floor routine that has become one of the standout performances in NCAA gymnastics.
Working closely with UCLA floor coach BJ Das, Sumanasekera said the concept for the routine came naturally, as both shared the vision of creating a “Bollywood princess” performance even before formal discussions began.
The choreography was completed quickly in just a few sessions, with an additional practice to refine the finer details.
A Pan American Games team gold medallist, she highlighted the joy and cultural authenticity she brings to the routine, incorporating expressive movements, energy, and South Asian influences that resonate strongly with audiences.
Her performance, filled with smiles and crowd engagement, has become a fan favourite and a defining moment of UCLA’s season.
Sumanasekera’s routine has also played a key role in boosting the UCLA Bruins into national prominence ahead of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth.
