Sri Lankan delegation heads to Washington for key tariff negotiations

A Sri Lankan delegation is preparing to travel to Washington, D.C. for in-person discussions on tariff-related issues, following an invitation from the United States Trade Representative (USTR). This marks the second face-to-face meeting as part of ongoing efforts to deepen trade ties between the two nations.

The visit follows a series of virtual engagements between Sri Lankan officials and the USTR, reinforcing a mutual commitment to strengthening economic cooperation. The talks are expected to focus on securing favorable trade terms and expanding opportunities in line with Sri Lanka’s economic recovery goals.

In preparation for the trip, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake chaired a high-level meeting to align the delegation’s objectives with national economic priorities. The discussion emphasized a strategic approach to ensure Sri Lanka’s interests are effectively represented in the talks.

Participants included Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Trade Ministry Secretary K.A. Vimalenthirarajah, Senior Economic Advisor to the President Duminda Hulangamuwa, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Finance Secretary K.M.M. Siriwardana, Attorney General’s Department representative Nirmal Vigneshwaran, and Dharshana Perera from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
