Sri Lankan Cinema Legend Malini Fonseka passes away

Sri Lankan cinema legend and iconic actress Malini Fonseka, revered as the “Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema,” passed away this morning (24yh) at the age of 76, while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

With a career spanning more than seven decades, Fonseka was one of the most influential and celebrated figures in Sri Lankan performing arts. She rose to prominence after winning Best Actress at the 1969 National State Drama Festival, and her fame grew with multiple Sarasaviya Awards for standout performances in films such as Hingana Kolla, Aradhana, and Yasa Isuru.

Making her film debut in 1968 with Punchi Baba, she went on to act in over 140 films, including international productions like Pilot Premnath alongside Indian film legend Sivaji Ganesan. Her contributions extended beyond film to theatre, television, and directing, making her a true pioneer.

Fonseka also became Sri Lanka’s first female teledrama director and received numerous accolades, including a Special Jury Award at the 1975 Moscow International Film Festival and recognition from CNN in 2010 as one of Asia’s 25 Greatest Film Actors of All Time.

She remained active in public life, serving as a Member of Parliament and receiving many national honors, including the Wishva Prasadhini Award and Presidential Awards. Her final onscreen appearance in the 2024 music video Eya Wasanthaya Nowe introduced her legacy to a new generation.

Malini Fonseka’s legacy lives on through her exceptional body of work and her lasting impact on Sri Lankan arts and culture.
