
The Sri Lanka athletics team is scheduled to return home today after a highly successful campaign at the Thailand Open Athletic Championship 2025, held in Bangkok from 21st to 25th of June.
The team, comprising eight athletes—four men and four women—secured an impressive total of 11 medals: six gold, four silver, and one bronze.
Gold medals were won by Rusiru Chathuranga in the Men’s 800m and 1,500m, V. Vakshan in the Men’s 5,000m, W.K.L.A. Nimali in the Women’s 800m, and Madushani Herath in both the Women’s long jump and triple jump events.
Silver medals were claimed by Ayomal Akalanka in the Men’s 400m hurdles, V. Vakshan in the Men’s 1,500m, W.K.L.A. Nimali in the Women’s 1,500m, and Wathsala Hapuarachchi in the Women’s 100m hurdles.
Safreen Ahmed added a bronze medal to the tally with his performance in the Men’s triple jump.
Amasha de Silva was the only Sri Lankan athlete who narrowly missed out on a podium finish, placing fourth in the Women’s 100m final.
The team’s remarkable performance has been praised by sports officials and fans, who see this as a promising sign for the future of athletics in Sri Lanka.
