Sri Lankan arrested in Tokyo following knife incident

A Sri Lankan national was arrested on Monday, 22 December, after threatening himself with a utility knife outside a Yoshinoya restaurant near Shinagawa Station in Minato-ku, Tokyo.

The man sustained minor bleeding injuries to his hand and neck but remained conscious. Police quickly cordoned off the area, engaged him in dialogue, and successfully persuaded him to drop the knife. No bystanders were harmed.

The incident took place around 10:30 a.m., when an officer spotted the man holding the knife to his throat and called for backup. More than ten officers arrived at the scene, secured the area, and contained the situation.

After complying with police instructions, the man was detained at the scene on suspicion of violating Japan’s Firearms and Swords Control Law.
