Sri Lanka welcomed 67,762 tourists between January 1 and January 8, 2026, according to provisional data from the latest tourism performance summary, pointing to a relatively slow start to the year.
This figure contrasts with previous years, when the country recorded 252,761 tourist arrivals in January 2025 and 238,924 arrivals in January 2018 over the full month, highlighting a softer opening in early 2026.
However, tourism authorities note that early-January figures do not present the full picture, as the first week typically accounts for only a small portion of total monthly arrivals. With the winter travel season in progress and an increase in international flight operations, industry sources expect arrivals to rise in the weeks ahead.
Sri Lanka’s tourism sector posted steady growth in 2025, welcoming 2,362,521 visitors, slightly higher than the 2,333,796 arrivals recorded in 2018, reflecting a gradual recovery and expansion of the industry.
Officials say close monitoring of arrival trends will be crucial in assessing whether Sri Lanka can match or surpass last year’s tourism performance as 2026 unfolds.
