The death toll from severe weather across five districts in Sri Lanka has risen to seven, as heavy rain triggered landslides and flooding in several areas.

Police said four people, including three women aged 47, 58 and 83, and a 22-year-old man, were killed after a landslide buried a house in Morahenagama, Polpitiya.

A 53-year-old man drowned after falling from a bridge over the Mahaweli River in Watawala, while two 67-year-old men were killed in separate landslides in Nawalapitiya, one after a shop collapsed and the other when a house was buried.

Authorities also reported a 45-year-old man missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Ginigathhena, while three others were injured due to the severe weather.

As heavy rain continues, all schools in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya remained closed today, with officials monitoring the situation closely.

A special meeting involving the Meteorology Department, Disaster Management Centre and Examinations Department will be held tomorrow to assess whether the upcoming Grade 5 Scholarship and GCE Advanced Level examinations require special arrangements due to the ongoing weather emergency.
