Sri Lanka to welcome 2 millionth tourist today

The Ministry of Tourism announced that Sri Lanka is ready to welcome its two millionth foreign tourist for the year today (26th).

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, stated that the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has organized a special event at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to celebrate the milestone.

As of December 22, 1,966,256 tourists had visited Sri Lanka in 2024, with December alone recording 161,383 arrivals.

India contributed the highest number of visitors in December, with 35,131 tourists, followed by 22,637 from Russia, 12,822 from the UK, 9,998 from Germany, and 8,646 from Australia.

Throughout the year, India remained the largest source of tourists, with 399,224 arrivals, followed by Russia with 189,289, and the UK with 172,404.

Prof. Ranasinghe also projected that Sri Lanka would close 2024 with approximately 2.1 million foreign visitors.
