Sri Lanka to set up coal quality testing lab

Sri Lanka is set to establish a laboratory for testing the quality standards of coal used in thermal power plants for electricity generation.

The facility will be located within the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI).

This decision was made following discussions between Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, and Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody.

Coal quality and standards are critical factors in thermal electricity generation, and currently, Sri Lanka lacks a dedicated laboratory for testing imported coal.

At present, these tests are conducted in foreign laboratories.

The new laboratory will help reduce costs associated with the testing process and improve efficiency in managing coal quality for energy production.
