Sri Lanka to pay Rs. 300–500 million to Adani for project costs

Sri Lanka is expected to pay Rs. 300–500 million to India’s Adani Company to cover initial expenses related to two renewable energy projects.

Adani Green Energy withdrew from the projects after pricing disputes with the current National People’s Power (NPP) government.

In May this year, the company formally announced its withdrawal and requested reimbursement for initial research and development costs.

Following the request, the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA), at the direction of the Energy Ministry, sought legal advice on the matter.

A top official confirmed that legal counsel supported reimbursing certain expenses, though not the amount paid for the energy permit.

The final reimbursement amount will be decided after consultation with the Attorney General and approval from the SEA board in the coming months.

Adani had planned to invest $442 million in wind power plants in Mannar and Pooneryn, with a target of adding 350 MW to the national grid by 2025.

The entire agreement with Adani will be officially concluded once the reimbursements are settled, paving the way for new tenders for the same projects.

The source added that Adani will be allowed to participate in the upcoming tender process if they choose to do so.

The original agreement with Adani was signed under the previous government and had received Cabinet approval at the time.
