Sri Lanka to launch unique digital ID project next month

Sri Lanka and India have agreed to expedite the implementation of the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identification (SLUDI) project.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) formalizing the partnership will be signed next month.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during his recent visit to India, expressed interest in adopting India’s successful digitalization models, including the Aadhaar system.

The SLUDI project aims to streamline access to government services, such as direct payments to Aswesuma beneficiaries, while minimizing corruption through secure digital transfers.

“This will be similar to India’s Aadhaar card, which has transformed the lives of millions,” Minister Herath explained.

The project will be spearheaded by Sri Lanka’s Digital Economic Affairs Ministry and ICTA, with support from the Indian government. An Indian delegation will visit Sri Lanka next month to initiate the project.
