Sri Lanka is set to establish a new network of Model Cities under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, focusing on digital services, environmentally friendly urban planning, and strong social values.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Clean Sri Lanka Task Force held at the Presidential Secretariat and chaired by Secretary to the President Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
According to the President’s Media Division, the project will receive full technical support from the University of Moratuwa to ensure that the development programme is implemented using practical and scientific approaches.
A special expert committee led by Dr. Sithumini Ratnamalala has also been appointed to develop guidelines based on international urban design standards.
As part of the initial phase, the committee will study successful city development models from around the world and prepare scientific guidelines for pilot model cities before expanding the framework nationwide.
The government said the Model Cities programme will go beyond physical infrastructure development and will also focus on building communities founded on strong moral, social, and civic values.
The initiative aims to create clean, environmentally sustainable cities while promoting a courteous and responsible urban culture that values mutual respect and social harmony.
Plans are also underway to introduce technology-driven e-services to provide essential public services more efficiently and transparently.
In addition, a panel of experts will be appointed to develop a scientifically based waste management system that can be implemented across the country.
