Sri Lanka to launch digital ID by April 2026 with assurances on privacy and data security

The Ministry of Digital Economy affirmed that the new Digital ID system, based on the MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform), is not merely a technical upgrade but a transformative step toward inclusive governance and national progress.

Officials emphasized that the Digital ID will play a central role in simplifying access to both public and private sector services, while improving transparency, efficiency, and accountability in government operations.

The system is designed with strong privacy protections, including modern encryption standards and secure data protocols, ensuring that citizen data remains safe and confidential.

Additionally, the Digital ID will support the development of Sri Lanka’s digital economy by enabling secure and reliable digital authentication.

Urging the public to view the initiative through a factual lens rather than fear, the Ministry called on all stakeholders to support the project as a long-term investment in the country’s digital infrastructure and future generations.
