Digital Economy Minister Eranga Weerarathne announced that the government plans to issue the Electronic National Identity Card (e-NIC) by mid-2026.
Speaking to the media, the Minister explained that the e-NIC will simplify identity verification and securely store biometric information.
He added that the new system is expected to reduce online fraud, minimize the need for repeated document certification across government and private institutions, and provide stronger protection against online scams.
