Sri Lanka to evaluate impact of Trump’s new tariffs

A special committee appointed to assess the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs on Sri Lanka is scheduled to meet yesterday (4th), according to Minister (Professor) Anil Jayantha.

The committee will evaluate the potential effects of the new U.S. tariff policies on Sri Lanka’s economy and propose strategies to mitigate any negative consequences.

On the previous day the committee met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat. During the meeting, an in-depth review was conducted on the rationale behind the tariffs and the challenges such policies pose for smaller economies like Sri Lanka.

Key economic leaders and industry representatives were present at the discussion, including Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Finance Secretary Mahinda Siriwardana, Export Development Board Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe, and top executives from Brandix, MAS Holdings, Lanka Garments, and Michelin Lanka Pvt Ltd.

The meeting also included Senior Economic Advisor to the President Duminda Hulugamuwa, Trade Ministry Secretary A. Wimalaneththiraja, and Chief Economic Policy Advisor to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Shiran Fernando.

Labour Minister and Deputy Economic Development Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, along with Deputy Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, also participated.

Professor Jayantha Fernando stated that the committee is expected to present its recommendations to the President yesterday (4th), paving the way for further action.
