Sri Lanka should seek revision of IMF targets, says CBSL governor

Sri Lanka should seek to revise the targets agreed with the International Monetary Fund under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has said.

Speaking on TV Derana’s current affairs programme 360° on January 12, Dr. Weerasinghe noted that discussions on revising the targets are expected when an IMF team visits Sri Lanka later this month.

The IMF delegation is scheduled to arrive to conduct the fifth review of the 48-month EFF arrangement.

The CBSL Governor said revising targets has become inevitable due to unforeseen events such as Cyclone Ditwah, which caused extensive damage to infrastructure and severely affected livelihoods across the country.

He added that factors including the annual budget, which was prepared before the cyclone struck, would need to be taken into account before finalising targets during the upcoming EFF review.
