
Sri Lanka’s population of juvenile elephants with tusks has risen by 9.2 percent between 2021 and 2024, according to statistics cited by Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Pathabendi.
The Minister told the Daily Mirror that juvenile tuskers accounted for 8.4 percent of the total elephant population in 2021, increasing to 17.6 percent in 2024. For comparison, the figure was 11 percent back in 1993.
He added that the overall proportion of tuskers in the population also grew slightly, from six percent to 6.5 percent during the same period.
The total elephant population in Sri Lanka increased to 7,451 in 2024, up from 5,879 in 2021.
