Sri Lanka Rugby legend Yu Cey Chang passes away

The Sri Lankan rugby community mourned the passing of rugby stalwart Yu Cey Chang, who died at the age of 82, with his funeral taking place today shortly after his death.

Known for his robust personality, YC Chang was one of the greatest forwards in Sri Lankan rugby history, having played as a prop forward for Havelocks, Kandy SC, and CH and FC.

He represented the national team for a decade during the All-Ceylon days and captained Sri Lanka at the 1972 Hong Kong Asiad.

Renowned for his tough, no-nonsense approach both on and off the field, YC Chang also made significant contributions as a rugby administrator, serving as President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union from 1985 to 1988.

Chang, who played junior rugby at Carey College and Trinity College, Kandy, made his club debut in 1961 for Havelocks and went on to have a remarkable career, playing alongside rugby greats like Nimal Maralande, Ken de Joodt, and Mike de Alwis.

After joining Kandy Sports Club in 1962, Chang helped the club reach the Clifford Cup final in 1969, and later captained CH and FC to a league championship in 1972.

His leadership extended to national duties, where he was appointed Sri Lanka captain for the Asian tournament in 1972, though an incident the following season brought an early end to his playing career.

After retiring from playing, Chang briefly took up refereeing and later turned to coaching, guiding St. Joseph’s College, CH and FC, and Isipathana College in the 1960s.

As a rugby administrator, Chang played a pivotal role in advancing Sri Lankan rugby, overseeing the professional era and playing a key role in the historic 1987 tour of Wales.

YC Chang will be remembered as a true legend of Sri Lankan rugby, whose contributions to the game have left an enduring legacy.
