The Sri Lanka National Football Team ended its 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a strong 3–1 victory over Chinese Taipei in Taipei, securing their second consecutive away win against the same opponent. Despite this impressive result, Sri Lanka did not qualify for the Asian Cup.
Competing in Group D, the team played six matches, winning three and finishing third in the standings. However, the victory has helped improve Sri Lanka’s position in world football, with their FIFA ranking expected to rise from 194 to around 190 after defeating a higher-ranked Chinese Taipei side.
Football Sri Lanka stated that over the past 18 months, the team has climbed from a ranking of 207 to around 190, showing consistent progress. The organization described the win as a historic milestone, highlighting the beginning of a new era for Sri Lankan football.
