Sri Lanka records highest-ever January tourist arrivals, signalling strong start to 2026

Sri Lanka has recorded its highest-ever tourist arrivals for the month of January, with 277,327 visitors welcomed in January 2026, surpassing the previous record of 252,761 arrivals last year. This achievement marks a strong and encouraging start to what is expected to be a record-breaking year for the country’s tourism industry.

Commenting on the milestone, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism said the achievement reflects the strength and resilience of the tourism sector. He noted that despite numerous challenges, including the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, the industry remained focused on recovery and growth. He further highlighted that Sri Lanka recorded 2,362,521 tourist arrivals in 2025, and the strong performance at the beginning of 2026 confirms the country’s steady progress towards sustainable growth.

The Chairman expressed confidence that, with continued public support and strong collaboration across all sectors, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry could achieve even greater success this year. He also emphasized the vital role played by the aviation sector in driving tourism growth as an island nation.

The record-breaking arrivals in January underline Sri Lanka’s growing appeal as a preferred travel destination and reflect the collective efforts of tourism stakeholders, government institutions, and the public in rebuilding and strengthening the industry.
