Sri Lanka records 8% decline in marriages in 2024

Sri Lanka experienced a significant decline in marriages in 2024, according to the latest figures released by the Department of Census and Statistics.

Data showed that 139,290 marriages were registered during the year, representing an 8 percent drop compared to 2023.

In contrast, 171,140 marriages were recorded in 2022, a year marked by the country’s severe economic crisis.

Meanwhile, official statistics also revealed a sharp decrease in births. The agency reported that only 220,761 births occurred in 2024, compared to 301,706 in 2020.
