A request has been made for President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to act as a mediator in resolving the escalating diplomatic tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thera emphasized that as the Head of State of a historically Theravāda Buddhist nation, the President holds the moral and constitutional authority to initiate peaceful dialogue between the two countries, with the involvement of Buddhist monks.
The Thera urged both Thailand and Cambodia—nations with deep-rooted Buddhist traditions—to approach the dispute with compassion and prioritize the cultural and spiritual heritage they have safeguarded for centuries.
He noted that a proposal supporting Sri Lanka’s intervention was unanimously approved by the Supreme Council of the Sangha. Accordingly, he called on the respective authorities of both countries to pay immediate attention to this initiative.
Ven. Sobhitha Thera further stated that the Sri Lankan Maha Sangha, together with concerned Buddhists and non-Buddhists, should take the lead in engaging with Thailand and Cambodia to find a peaceful resolution through dialogue and mutual respect.
