Sri Lanka President delivers Christmas message

Christians around the world joyfully commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ today (25), observing the sacred celebration of Christmas with deep devotion.

This year, the people of Sri Lanka mark Christmas at a decisive moment in the nation’s journey, having endured an extremely challenging natural disaster while striving with determination to overcome its hardships and rebuild. The true meaning of Christmas lies in love, peace, joy, sharing, and sacrifice, with a special commitment to supporting the oppressed and working toward the liberation and dignity of all people.

In the face of the recent disaster, Sri Lankans once again demonstrated profound human values by embracing neighbours in distress with compassion and unwavering resolve. This spirit, upheld by Christianity and all religions, was clearly reflected in the selfless efforts of citizens who traversed difficult paths to deliver relief to those affected. Their actions gave living meaning to the Christmas message of loving one’s neighbour and building a society rooted in empathy and solidarity.

Christian teachings remind us that darkness can only be dispelled by spreading light. Jesus Christ, born in humble surroundings in Bethlehem, sacrificed his life on the Cross at Mount Calvary to save humanity from sin. Through faith, determination, and wisdom, He triumphed over death and rose again, offering hope to all humankind.

At this time, I invite all Sri Lankans to rise together as one nation, facing painful realities with courage and unity. May this blessed Christmas renew our humanity through compassion and bring peace, joy, and hope to every home.

I wish you all a peaceful, joyful, and compassionate Christmas.
