

The new High Commission of Sri Lanka in Wellington has been officially inaugurated, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

The diplomatic mission was officially declared open yesterday in conjunction with the official visit of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister Herath stated that the establishment of the new High Commission would further enhance the longstanding diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between the two countries.
Winston Peters attended the inauguration ceremony as a special guest.
The event began with Sri Lankan religious observances alongside traditional Māori blessings, reflecting the cultural traditions of both nations.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Herath described the opening of the High Commission as the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Senior officials from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, members of the diplomatic community and representatives of the Sri Lankan community in New Zealand were also present at the event.
The new High Commission is expected to provide improved consular services for more than 30,000 Sri Lankans living in New Zealand while also promoting cooperation in trade, tourism and education between the two countries.
