In a major stride towards enhancing global educational ties, Sri Lanka’s Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the prestigious National University of Singapore (NUS).
The MoU was signed in Colombo by Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa, following the earlier signing in Singapore by NUS Vice Chancellor Professor Thean Voon Yew on May 5, 2025. The agreement was officially finalized through coordination with the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore.
Discussions on the collaboration began in February 2025, leading to Cabinet approval on April 28 and the subsequent signing of the MoU.
This landmark agreement establishes a framework for broad academic cooperation, including doctoral scholarships for Sri Lankan students, undergraduate fellowships, faculty exchanges, and collaborative research in selected academic fields. It also includes joint academic and scientific programmes to foster innovation and scholarly exchange.
Further discussions are scheduled to finalize operational details to ensure smooth implementation of the partnership.
The Ministry emphasized that this initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to international collaboration in education and supports the country’s goal of developing a skilled, globally competitive workforce.
“This partnership with NUS is a milestone in our pursuit of world-class opportunities for Sri Lankan students and academics,” the Ministry said in an official statement.
