Sri Lanka has recorded the largest improvement in peacefulness among South Asian nations, according to the 2026 Global Peace Index released by the Institute for Economics & Peace.

The country climbed to 67th place globally, becoming the second most peaceful nation in South Asia behind Bhutan, a significant rise from its 97th position in the 2025 rankings.

According to the report, Sri Lanka’s overall peacefulness score improved by 2.3 percent over the past year, driven by gains in militarisation, increased support for UN peacekeeping efforts, and a reduction in political instability that contributed to improved safety and security.

The achievement comes despite a broader global decline in peace, with the report noting that worldwide peacefulness deteriorated for the 12th consecutive year, while 99 countries recorded a decline in peace levels compared to just 62 that showed improvement.
