Sri Lanka must not become victim or intermediary in Middle East conflict: Minister

Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that Sri Lanka must never become an intermediary or a victim in the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Addressing the media, he said the country is prepared to contribute in any possible way — whether through formal requests or diplomatic engagement — to help bring an end to the hostilities.

“We express our condolences to all those who have lost their lives — leaders, diplomats, ordinary citizens, schoolchildren and young children on all sides of the conflict. Our hope is that these hostilities will end soon and that all parties will resolve their differences through negotiations,” he said.

Dr. Jayatissa noted that international institutions established after World War II were created to prevent such conflicts, and that member states, including Sri Lanka, have a responsibility to support global peace efforts. He added that with modern technology, conflicts are no longer confined to a single geographic area and can escalate unpredictably.

“As a nation, we will do everything possible — through diplomatic requests and actions — to support efforts aimed at ending the conflict,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted the risks faced by Sri Lankans living and working abroad, as well as the wider threat to the global economy. “War has never brought progress; it is always the ordinary people who suffer the most. Our position is clear: Sri Lanka should not become a pawn or a victim in this war. We remain committed to preventing such conflicts through both words and actions,” he concluded.
