Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Chairman Dr. Vajira Dissanayake was removed from his post today following a Supreme Court ruling and subsequently tendered his resignation to Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
In his resignation letter, Dr. Dissanayake acknowledged the Supreme Court’s decision, allowing the Health Minister to proceed with appointing a new SLMC president.
The judgment is linked to a long-standing legal battle that began in 2020, when then-Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi dismissed SLMC President Prof. Harendra Silva along with four others.
The Court of Appeal later overturned that decision, ruling it unlawful and arbitrary.
Although the matter was later taken to the Supreme Court, the case was dismissed today, upholding the Court of Appeal’s earlier verdict.
However, since the tenure of Prof. Silva and the others has already expired, reinstatement is no longer possible.
