The Sri Lankan government has approved a proposal to install barrier nets in 250 permanent freshwater reservoirs over the next two years to prevent the loss of fish stock and boost inland fish production, according to a statement by the Department of Government Information on Thursday.
The statement highlighted that between 20,000 and 40,000 kilograms of fish are washed out of a single freshwater reservoir annually when water is released for various purposes.
This loss of mature fish, particularly those capable of reproduction, has significantly depleted future fish stocks. The statement emphasized that freshwater and aquaculture farming are vital for providing nutritious food to rural communities.
Sri Lanka is home to 95 species of freshwater fish, 52 of which are endemic to the country, according to official data.
