The Government has launched a nationwide programme titled Surakimu Lanka to encourage the public to conserve energy amid concerns over potential supply disruptions linked to Middle East tensions and possible El Niño conditions.
The initiative, which began on March 29, will run for five months and aims to promote responsible energy use while strengthening national energy security.
According to the President’s Media Division, the programme seeks to build a community that uses energy efficiently, with a strong focus on voluntary public participation in managing electricity demand.
Authorities noted that the programme also takes into account forecasts of El Niño, a climate phenomenon caused by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which can disrupt global weather patterns and lead to reduced rainfall in South Asia, including Sri Lanka.
Lower rainfall during such periods can significantly impact hydropower generation, increasing reliance on costly thermal power and fuel imports.
Under the programme, the public is encouraged to limit electricity use during peak hours from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. and shift high-energy activities to daytime whenever possible.
Officials emphasized that the initiative does not impose restrictions but instead promotes voluntary conservation and greater public awareness.
Implemented under the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, themed “Surakimu Lanka – Let’s Unite – Let’s Shine Bright,” the programme will involve state institutions, the private sector, civil society, and the general public.
The Government also stressed the importance of using national resources efficiently and transparently while actively engaging citizens to ensure energy security during a period of global uncertainty.
