Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra has stressed that strict legal action will be taken against fraudulent intermediaries involved in the recruitment of Sri Lankan nurses to Israel.
He made these remarks during discussions held yesterday with officials of Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) on issues concerning contractual employment between the two countries.
The talks focused on two key areas. The first was complaints against intermediaries who exploit nurse recruits by demanding money, land, or property as guarantees and engaging in other fraudulent practices. The Deputy Minister said such cases will be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), while new measures will be introduced to make the recruitment process more transparent.
The second issue addressed was the difficulties faced by Sri Lankan workers in Israel’s hotel sector. Officials noted that Israel responded positively, and both countries agreed to work together to find speedy solutions.
