Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited (AASL) has announced that Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for the development and operation of Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. The invitation has been extended to both local and international investors interested in the future expansion and commercial use of the airport.

Located in southern Sri Lanka, the airport spans approximately 600 hectares and offers a wide range of investment opportunities.
The move follows a Cabinet decision to cancel a previous bidding process launched by the former administration, which had focused only on passenger operations.
Proposed investment areas include airport operations, cargo and logistics services, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities, aircraft spare parts manufacturing, and the development of industrial parks for manufacturing, packaging, and warehousing.
The EOI also highlights opportunities in renewable energy, tourism, and hospitality, including resort hotels and related services.
At present, the airport is operating at a significant loss of around Rs. 3 billion annually. Although passenger traffic reached a modest peak of 150,000 travellers in 2025, it remains well below the airport’s one-million-passenger capacity.
