Sri Lanka grapples with unstable and complicated weather conditions

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing rainy weather due to multiple factors, with the enhanced Southwest Monsoon being the main contributor, the Department of Meteorology stated.

Climatologist Malith Fernando said a nearby low-pressure area is influencing wind flow but is not expected to have a major impact.

Sudden rain showers in areas like Colombo are caused by abrupt changes in wind patterns.

The current weather conditions are expected to subside after May 31st of May.

The Meteorology Department warned of high waves (2.5m to 3m) along the coast from Mannar to Pottuvil via several key locations including Colombo and Galle.

Naval and fishing communities have been advised to avoid sea areas from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil until further notice.

The inclement weather on the western slopes of the Central Hills has disrupted civilian life and caused widespread damage.

Gale-force winds and heavy rains have uprooted trees and caused landslides, obstructing traffic on key highways such as Hatton–Colombo and Hatton–Bogawanthalawa.

Emergency crews have cleared some blocked roads, while displaced families are being relocated to safer areas.

Power lines in Hatton, Norwood, Kotagala, and Norton have been damaged, and efforts are underway to restore electricity.

A tree fell on a church in Wewathenna, Bandarawela, causing heavy damage, though no injuries were reported.
