Sri Lanka grants free visa extensions and flexible flight changes for stranded tourists

Sri Lanka has introduced special support measures for tourists affected by the ongoing severe weather, offering free visa extensions and flexible airline policies to ease travel disruptions.

Authorities announced that all tourists whose visas have expired during the current situation will receive extensions at no cost. The decision aims to ensure visitors are not penalised or inconvenienced by delays caused by floods and transport disruptions across the island.

Airlines operating to and from Sri Lanka have also implemented flexible measures, including full waivers on flight cancellation fees and date-change charges for travellers forced to reschedule due to adverse weather. Carriers have been instructed to allow affected passengers to adjust their travel dates without additional costs.

A simplified verification process has also been introduced, with tourism authorities confirming that a traveller’s self-declaration of being affected by the weather will be sufficient to qualify for fee waivers and flexible rebooking.

Officials urged tourists in the country to prioritise safety, follow official advisories and contact the 1912 tourism hotline for assistance.
