Sri Lanka eyes introduction of skydiving to boost adventure tourism

A feasibility discussion on introducing skydiving activities in Sri Lanka was held yesterday at the Ministry of Defence under the patronage of Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), with the participation of representatives from Skydive Sri Lanka.

During the meeting, Skydive Sri Lanka representatives delivered a detailed presentation outlining the concept of skydiving, its potential as an adventure tourism attraction and proposed operational aspects. Discussions centred on the prospects of developing skydiving as a new addition to Sri Lanka’s tourism offerings and its potential contribution to the sector.

The Defence Secretary highlighted the need to identify possible challenges and bottlenecks associated with promoting skydiving activities in the country. He instructed officials to carefully review regulatory, safety and operational considerations while assessing the overall feasibility of the initiative.

He further directed that the findings be compiled and submitted for further discussion in due course. Senior officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, relevant ministries and representatives of Skydive Sri Lanka were also present at the meeting.
