Sri Lanka eyes high-end Marine tourism with focus on dhipwreck diving

Sri Lanka is looking to expand its marine tourism sector as a high-value industry capable of generating significant foreign exchange earnings, with a particular focus on developing shipwreck diving as a premium attraction.

Although exact revenue targets are still being finalised by tourism authorities, industry analyses suggest that marine tourism could bring substantial income to the local economy. Experts note that the recurring revenue generated by international dive tourism far exceeds the one-time scrap metal value of sunken vessels, which currently stands at around Rs. 20 per kilogram.

Authorities say that by developing proper infrastructure, logistics and safety standards, Sri Lanka aims to capitalise on this high-end tourism segment to boost coastal economies while supporting ocean conservation efforts.

The initiative is being advanced through collaboration between the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Sri Lanka Navy, with a strong emphasis on sustainable marine tourism.

As part of the strategy, professional divers will be engaged to capture high-quality promotional material, which will be used across digital platforms to strengthen the country’s tourism brand.

Officials believe that the development of eco-friendly and science-based marine tourism will attract high-spending international divers and adventure travellers, helping Sri Lanka maintain a competitive edge in the Indian Ocean tourism market.
