Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, Arun Hemachandra, held a constructive meeting this afternoon in Brussels with Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee (INTA) and EU GSP+ Rapporteur.
The discussion centred on strengthening Sri Lanka’s partnership with the European Union, with a focus on continuing the GSP+ scheme, promoting fair-trade cooperation, and expanding market opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters in the EU, the statement said.
Deputy Minister Hemachandra briefed Lange on Sri Lanka’s economic stabilisation progress, including advances under the IMF programme, improved credit ratings, rising investor confidence, and the Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
Both sides also discussed the Fairtrade business delegation currently visiting Sri Lanka, which is expected to create new opportunities for the country’s organic and Fairtrade-certified producers to connect with major European companies.
Sri Lanka reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the highest labour, environmental, and ethical production standards, and expressed its commitment to further deepening cooperation with the European Union for the long-term benefit of its workforce, industries, and national development, the Foreign Ministry added.
