Sri Lanka Customs is currently in a transitional phase, during which it has acknowledged the clear need to electronically link four key institutions—the Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), the Department of Inland Revenue and the Department of Import and Export Control.
At present, full electronic integration is mainly in place with the Department of Motor Traffic, while connections with the other agencies are still being developed.
Once registration and tax data are shared among all four institutions, the government aims to establish a transparent system that allows the complete fiscal history of a vehicle to be accessed by all relevant authorities.
This modernisation initiative, outlined in a report submitted to Parliament on November 6, 2025 by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is viewed as a critical step towards enabling Sri Lanka Customs to meet its ambitious revenue targets in a more transparent and efficient manner.
