Sri Lanka calls for regional unity and collective progress

Sri Lanka has reaffirmed the importance of regional unity and shared progress as vital elements for the development of South Asia.

Speaking at the 6th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum in Kunming, China, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra emphasized that South Asia’s demographic strength, strategic location, and rich cultural and intellectual heritage must be harnessed through collaboration. He invited investors and partners from China and across the region to explore opportunities in key sectors such as infrastructure, technology, green energy, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.

The Deputy Minister also participated in the 9th China-South Asia Exposition, where Sri Lanka was featured as the Theme Country, underscoring the nation’s growing role in regional trade and cooperation.

During the visit, Hemachandra held bilateral discussions with the Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, exploring future partnerships in areas including processed food, apparel, agriculture, and tourism. He also expressed interest in technical assistance and knowledge exchange, particularly in the cut flower industry, where Yunnan is globally renowned.

Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe inaugurated the Sri Lanka Theme Pavilion at the Kunming Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center and delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony.

Sri Lanka’s participation at the exposition highlighted its economic strengths and cultural heritage, showcasing a wide range of high-value exports such as gems and jewellery, Ceylon Tea, coconut products, spices, wellness items, handicrafts, and processed foods. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Sri Lanka’s engagement aimed to boost trade ties, expand export opportunities, and enhance regional market access.
