Sri Lanka and Malaysia are strengthening tourism ties through a joint promotional campaign launched by Tourism Malaysia and SriLankan Airlines to boost leisure travel between the two countries.
With growing interest among Sri Lankans in international holidays for leisure, shopping, and corporate travel, Malaysia has become a top destination due to its blend of modern cities, cultural attractions, and family-friendly entertainment.
To promote Malaysia’s appeal to Sri Lankan travellers, SriLankan Airlines recently hosted a familiarisation tour for local media, showcasing popular destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Putrajaya, and Genting Highlands. The tour highlighted Malaysia’s offerings in history, culture, and entertainment.
Solehuddin Ahmad, Deputy Director of the South Asia Unit at Malaysia’s Tourism Promotion Board, noted a steady rise in Sri Lankan tourist arrivals, especially in family, religious, and retail-focused travel segments. He credited this growth to Malaysia’s diverse attractions and the “Visit Malaysia” campaign launched in February 2025.
Deepal Perera, Manager of Corporate Communications at SriLankan Airlines, emphasized the initiative’s potential for two-way tourism, with efforts underway to also attract Malaysian travellers to Sri Lanka. He highlighted mutual investments in tourism infrastructure and the opportunity to explore each other’s cultural and culinary richness.
As World Tourism Day approaches on 27th of September both nations are ramping up promotions, spotlighting Malaysia’s vibrant destinations and aiming to position each other as preferred regional travel hubs.
