The Sri Lanka Air Force has been deployed to assist in rescue operations along the country’s expressway network, according to Air Force Media Spokesperson Group Captain Nalin Wewakumbura.
He stated that responsibility for these operations was officially handed over to the Air Force from April 17.
Previously, rescue and emergency response duties on expressways were managed by the Police Special Task Force. Under the new arrangement, the Air Force will oversee operations on the Katunayake–Kottawa and Kottawa–Mattala expressway sections, while the STF will continue handling rescue operations on the Mirigama expressway segment.
Air Force personnel have been strategically deployed at key locations including Seeduwa, Galanigama, Kurundugahahetekma, Pinnaduwa, and Sooriyawewa to ensure a rapid and effective response to emergencies along the expressways.
