Sri Lanka aims to attract 3 million tourists in 2025

Sri Lanka is set to make a major advancement in its tourism sector, with the goal of attracting 3 million tourists in 2025.

This ambitious target follows a projected 2.1 million visitors in 2024 as the country continues to recover from recent economic setbacks.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), led by newly appointed chairman Buddhika Hewawasam, is driving various reforms and initiatives to boost the industry and draw more international tourists.

A Unified Approach to Tourism Growth

To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the sector, a National Tourism Commission is being established. This new governing body will bring together four state agencies currently managing tourism, including a hotel school.

The commission will ensure coordinated policy execution and promote industry growth.

In addition, a Tourism Policy Formulation Council, made up of experts from different fields, will be formed to offer strategic direction and support to the sector. Hewawasam unveiled these plans at the Sri Lanka Tourism Awards ceremony in Colombo on December 27, which marked the revival of the awards after a five-year break.

The event recognized outstanding achievements in the tourism sector, honoring top resorts and service providers.
