Spain are FIFA World Cup champions once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic extra-time final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup and sealing Spain’s second world title.

Spain dominated possession and created the majority of the chances throughout the match, while Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest.

Argentina’s task became even harder late in the game after Enzo Fernández was sent off, leaving the defending champions to finish with ten men.

The victory marks Spain’s first FIFA World Cup title since 2010 and caps off an outstanding tournament in which they conceded just one goal in eight matches.

For Lionel Messi, the defeat is expected to bring an emotional end to his remarkable World Cup career, while Spain celebrate another historic moment on football’s biggest stage.
