South Korean President apologizes for declaring martial law

In his first speech since declaring martial law earlier this week, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol gave a very brief speech in which he reiterated that he would not resign.

Apologizing for the calamity and disruption he caused; he said he would let his party decide how to stabilize the country.

He also promised not to try to do something like this again.

Calling Yoon’s speech “very disappointing,” opposition leader Lee Jae-myung said the president’s brief remarks “did not meet the public’s expectations and were a further betrayal of them.”

The fate of the President is in the hands of Parliament as MPs vote on whether to impeach the President.
